Disenfranchised grief is generally grief that is not openly acknowledged, socially accepted, or doesn’t fit in with larger society’s attitude about dealing with death and loss. Like coming out, break up, death of a partner, death of a pet, mental illness, abuse, loss of home, physical health, divorce, loss of a friendship, loss of dreams or even the death of your doctor whom you have been with for years.
These losses may not or cannot be openly expressed, recognized, or acknowledged by others because you may feel embarrassed or ashamed to talk about. because often there is a lack of support, understanding and sometimes judgement: “It’s just a dog” or “My spouse died so what are you grieving about”. Yet these losses can impact a person’s life and prolong emotional pain. So, we will look at how society looks at loss and gain a better understanding of disenfranchised grief and how it can impact our lives and relationships with ourselves and others. Finally, how will explore the importance of a successful grief resolution
