Oak Savanna Hike at Fish Lake Nature Trail

Enrichment Adult / Fitness -
AE 2526 Fall

The Fish Lake Nature Trail winds through several distinct ecosystems along its one path. During this hike hikers will be led through a sand prairie before encountering Fish Lake. Then, the hike will focus on the bur oak savanna —one of Minnesota’s rarest wildlife habitats. We will discuss and observe red-headed woodpeckers that are common but restricted to this area, other typical flora and fauna, and the role of bison and other management techniques to maintain this highly endangered plant community. There will be multiple opportunities to stop and listen and look for birds as well as other animals or their signs like nests and tracks. Wear sturdy walking shoes and bring water, snacks and binoculars, if you have them.

Please park at the lot on the north end of the forest.
