  • Day Trip: Cafesjian Art Trust Museum & Lunch

    The Cafesjian Art Trust is a new public institution featuring the private art collection of Gerard Cafesjian. His 3000+ pieces of art include Contemporary and Modern paintings and sculpture, as well as one of the most impressive collections of art glass sculpture in the world. Masterworks by well-known Modern and Contemporary artists such as Victor Vasarely, Georges Braque, Joan Miro, Arshile Gorky and many others are also represented in the collection as well as a chandelier by Dale Chihuly. The exhibit in November will be Collidoscope: de la Torre Brothers Retro-Perspective. We will take a guided 30 minute tour of the Museum and then have time to explore on your own. After the museum, join us for lunch at the Churchill Street Restaurant, a brunch and dinner restaurant, coffee bar, market and community gathering place in Shoreview, Minnesota. They serve scratch-made modern classics using sustainable, local and seasonal ingredients as often as possible. THIS IS A "DRIVE ON YOUR OWN DAY TRIP" - THERE WILL NOT BE A BUS.     Enjoy a festive holiday outing to beautiful Duluth! Begin with a relaxing lunch at Black Woods Grill and choose between classic chicken pot pie or hearty meatloaf. After lunch, we’ll tour the historic Glensheen Mansion, where the smaller rooms are beautifully decorated for the holiday season. This guided tour includes the basement, first, and second floors. (Please note: there is no elevator access.) Then it’s on to the magical Bentleyville Tour of Lights at Bayfront Festival Park, an outdoor holiday display featuring millions of lights, music, Christmas trees, cozy fire pits, and a gift shop. Enjoy complimentary hot cocoa, coffee, popcorn, and marshmallows for roasting. Donations are welcome. The drive includes brief comfort stops in Hinckley both directions.     Ride the rails to Trego, Wisconsin, a delightful opportunity to experience historic rail travel aboard a beautifully restored train featuring cars from 1912 to 1918. As you board, you'll be transported back in time, surrounded by vintage décor and authentic details that recreate the golden age of railroads. Enjoy a leisurely lunch in the dining car, where you can savor a delicious meal while gazing out at the scenic Wisconsin countryside, making for an unforgettable journey that blends nostalgia with culinary delight. Details of the day 8:00 a.m. Leave from Mahtomedi District Center,1520 Mahtomedi Ave Mahtomedi, MN 55115 9:00 a.m. Make a comfort stop at the Goose Creek Rest Area near Harris, MN 10:45 a.m. Arrival at the NW Wisconsin Regional Visitor Center in Trego, WI. Take time to use the restroom and visit the gift store. The train staff will load guests into the dining cars 11:15 a.m. Depart on the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad. The historic railroad recreates the atmosphere of rail travel using rebuilt cars from 1912 to 1918. Ride the rails to Bean Creek. Have lunch in the dining car. Menu: Chicken Entrée with Rice, Vegetable, Dinner Roll, Cookie and Coffee or Lemonade.   • Dr. Mark Seeley: Minnesota's Most Historic and Impactful Blizzards

    Blizzards have long been part of Minnesota’s climate, especially in the western prairie ecosystems. Many pioneer newspapers, diaries, and letters contain stories of blizzards and their impact on Minnesota communities. In the early days of statehood there was no National Weather Service system in place to warn citizens about impending blizzards and dangerous storms. Stories of survival abound. Further, our historic climate observations well document blizzards in terms of speed, intensity, duration, and impact. All of these topics will be discussed in this presentation by Dr. Mark Seeley!
  • Dr. Mark Seeley: Minnesota's Worst Droughts and Drought Tendencies

    Drought has been part of Minnesota history even before statehood (1858). Severe droughts have dried up lakes and streams, produced some of the worst wildfires, and bankrupted many farmers. Several of the most impactful droughts will be discussed. In addition, drought onset, drought duration, and drought recovery characteristics appear to be changing as a result of climate change. Adaptation is required to effectively cope with this.

    Preparing your will is an important step in providing for the ones you love. Week 1 ~ Learn the various techniques for property distribution of your estate. Explore basic estate planning concepts and assess your needs for your estate plan. You will receive sample forms and language to use while you draft your own will. It will be necessary for participants to type or handwrite their own document. The Instructor will also cover circumstances that may require a review/revision of your will and a brief review of the benefits of a trust. Questions welcome.
